Audax Architecture has designed the 101 Spadina as a contemporary expression of the historic architectural character of the King-Spadina neighbourhood, which contains many listed and designated heritage buildings linked to the area’s history as a garment manufacturing district.
The building features opaque masonry-finished cladding with punched windows, referencing the materiality of nearby heritage buildings that are comprised of primarily brick and stone facades. The scale of the podium element reinforces the form and massing of iconic heritage buildings along Spadina such as the Balfour Building, the Tower Building, and the Fashion Building.
The building employs architectural elements such as colonnades, heavy cornices and arches to achieve continuity with the heritage context while providing an architectural design that is legible as a contemporary building. The overall result is a compatible and complementary new building that is distinct within its immediate context, exists harmoniously within the old and the new, and contributes to a sense of place.
We are guided by a sense of responsibility to create homes that enhance the lives of residents, and buildings that contribute to the communities within which we develop, in a long-lasting and meaningful way. We strive to deliver homes that will be appreciated beyond the current generation as more than a building, but rather a residence built on a foundation of thoughtful design and pride in quality. Every residence is designed and built to stand the test of time, to become a catalyst for positive change.
